Yeah, he is. But Luffy, we're in love. [Something about Luffy is starting to click for Ace that he hadn't really thought about.] You get that, right?

[Pause.]

Um. Sort of? Like in stories and stuff. Or like what Sanji talks about?

[He can't imagine Ace acting anything like Sanji does. ]

I don't think anyone actually loves like Sanji does. Who knows what's going on in his head?

[Ooh, this is hard to say.] It's kinda like in the stories, yeah. You know how a lot of those stories end, right? The get married and live happily ever after. [He feels so stupid.] I dunno if I believe in story book endings. But we're still gonna get married.

[It isn't like Luffy has never heard of getting married, but it's hard to make that overlap in his head with Ace. ]

Does that mean you guys are gonna stop being pirates?

[It's Luffy. He doesn't know what to expect at this point.]

Do you think anything could stop me from being a pirate? Hell no. We're just going to be married pirates.

[Look, in all the stories, when people get married they go settle down on land somewhere and stop having cool adventures.]

Ohhh! Well, that's cool then! [He's actually not entirely sure how you're supposed to react to things like this, but the point is, Ace sounds happy. That's what's important.] So you're gonna have a big party, right?

[Well those stories suck. Life's too short to give up on cool adventures.]

Yeah, a huge party. It's going to be on the beach, I think, and there's gonna be tons of food. And a massive cake, so everyone can have a piece. It's going to be a lot of fun.

AWESOME!!

[Married schmarried, the party's the important bit.]

Cool! When are you gonna do it? Do you wanna borrow Sanji to make all that food?

I don't know, but probably pretty soon. It's going to be so cool, I think we want barbecue. You can't go wrong with grilled meat on the beach, right? And lots of booze and stuff! [Oh god, yes please, borrowing the smoking pervert is a promise of a high quality party in the food department.] Can we? That'll make it a way better party. Sanji's food is amazing!

For this? Yeah, you totally can! I bet the little one will come to help too! But you gotta give 'em both back when you're done, okay? No stealing my cooks!

[His mouth is watering just thinking about the feast Ace describes, all of it made by his talented chef's hands.]

It'll be the biggest party ever!

[Ace laughs at that, no stealing my cooks, of course Luffy would treat his crew like something he can actually own and give or take. It's not that Luffy sees them as items, but they're his. And it's kind of crazy to try to get inside of Luffy's head in any sense.] I'm not keeping them. Promise. You guys wouldn't survive long without them anyway. Can you imagine if Zoro tried taking over cooking duty?

[Ace is getting pretty hungry thinking about it too. He wants a big meal made by Sanji, and he wants to eat as much of it as he wants. It's probably going to be pretty pricey to get all the stuff, but it's worth it.] Yeah, and everyone we like can come!

I've had Zoro's cooking!

[There's a reason getting a cook was such a priority when he was gathering his crew. ]

That's why Sanji's so important. All Sanjis. [Cause the little one is important too. ]

How bad was it?

[It sounds like nightmare fuel.]

Yeah, when Thatch was around he was fought over. Everyone wanted to be his best friend just 'cause he cooked so good. I mean, that's not all that was good about him, he was amazing. But when you can cook, and you're good at it, it's gonna put you up a little higher in the popularity ranks.

Umm. Better than mine?

[Which says absolutely nothing, really. Even Luffy can concede that he's generally better off just eating things raw than trying to prepare them on his own.]

Must be why people keep trying to steal Sanji from me.

That's not that hard to do. Guess our family got all the fighting talent and none of the cooking talent. I burn almost everything.

[Ace has had a couple of solid attempts, but it's a good thing that Marco doesn't expect home cooked meals regularly.] They can try, but they're gonna fail.

Yeah! Maybe after this whole Big Mom thing, people will know better.

[Oh yeah, did he forget to tell his brother that story?]

Anyway! I bet Sanji will be happy to help. And we'll have a big huge party for you guys and everything will be great.

Big Mom? What are you doing with Big Mom?

[This is a story that he needs to hear, the wedding and party plans are mentally going by the wayside.]

She's crazy. Going up against her is pretty crazy. But if she stole a friend, you had to get him back.

[Does he like this? No. Does he get it? Yes.]

Yeah, she is pretty weird! I didn't really fight her, though. Just one of her kids.

[He's not intentionally downplaying anything, though.]

He was cool in the end, but it was really hard to beat him!

That's probably good. She's really strong. [He's curious though.] Which kid did you end up fighting?

Yeah! She got pretty weird when we wrecked her cake... castle... thing.

Oh! He was... uh. The big guy. [Give him a second, he's bad with long names.] Ka... Kakura? No, Katakuri, that was it! Katakuri.

Seriously? I wanna know all about how you kicked his ass. That's no small feat, most of her kids are scary strong.

[Just how strong has Luffy become?]

[Remember how Luffy mentioned he couldn't count the zeroes in his bounty anymore? Yeah.]

It was pretty hard! His haki is really good. But I figured out some new stuff while I was fighting him.

[He needs to find one of those updated bounty posters...]

That's just how you do things. You take on someone hard, and you figure stuff out as you go. If you were weak, you wouldn't make it with that strategy. But you're you, so you always come out okay.

[There's plenty of them around! Maybe he can also buy some merch from Barto while he's at it.]

That's right! It's why my crew's all full of strong people too. No one can stop us.

[Kuma sort of did, for a little while anyway. But let's not talk about that.

Luffy goes quiet for a minute, gears turning in his head.]

... Hey, Ace? No one's gonna try and make a problem at your wedding or anything, right?

Yeah. Especially here. Can you imagine if you got an even bigger group together? No one would have a chance. Not that they do anyway.

[Ace knows better. There's always a bigger fish. But he doesn't want to think about it right now. And he doesn't want to think about the chance of problems happening on what should be a happy day of celebration.] I have a bounty again. People know I'm back. I don't think that it's going to be an issue, as long as we keep it quiet and just for friends and family. But I had a run in a couple weeks ago, so I'm not gonna pretend that people wouldn't make things an issue if they found out about it. [A group of that many wanted people in one group? They'd be a fantastic target.]

[Luffy's scowling so hard it's audible.]

A run in? How bad was it? Who was there?

[If he has to tear apart another whole island for Ace, he will -- in a heartbeat.]

It's okay Luffy. I didn't get caught.

[But this isn't the only time he's found himself in a run in with the Marines here. He ignorantly, or perhaps just hopefully, thought that death was enough and that the price of his sins had been paid. It's not the case though. And even now, the World Government wants him gone.] I'm strong, and I guess they didn't think that I still had my flames. So it wasn't that big of a deal. [But it was. And each time it's a clear reminder that things will never be enough, and unless he dies again this won't end. But now, he has so much more to live for. He's closer than ever to Luffy, he's in love and happy, and he's made friends that are important to him. So it's worth it to keep going.] They're so damn annoying.

They need to leave you alone!

[A childish protest, and one that even Luffy himself recognizes as impotent. He doesn't understand all the politics behind the government's deep rage toward Ace, but he knows enough -- has to, considering that he's placed himself in the footsteps of the man who truly ignited that fury.

It's still unfair that it's Ace who's wound up the target, when he didn't ask to be anyone's son or make any decision to do that. And the newer, more mature Luffy who has begun to peek out over the past two years can't stand unfairness when he finds it.]

They need bigger things to worry about.

[His tone says and I will give them those things.]

I wish it was that easy. But we both know better. [He sighs.] They can try all the want, but this time I'm not alone. [He doesn't go far from a TRAVERSE point now, he refuses to be careless about things. He always keeps a quick escape in the options. He hates the idea of running from a fight, but if that fight leads to his end? It's not worth the pride issues to keep going at it.] I'm not gonna get caught again, okay? So you don't have to worry about anything.

[Ace knows that they won't give up. That his days are probably numbered. But he won't give up or give in. He's got too much to live for to wallow in fear for the rest of his days. ] Don't do anything stupid, okay? I know you're strong as hell. You can handle yourself. But some people are out of both of our weight classes. [And if Luffy dies Ace might not be able to handle the loss.]

I'm not gonna pick a fight alone or anything.

[Probably.

But that gives him an idea, one that isn't quite ready to go into words, but he likes it a lot. ]

Hey, Ace, do you know where you're gonna have your wedding? Like, are you gonna pick an island or be out at sea?

Okay. I'll be collecting all your bounty posters as they're updated. I wanna see how far you go.

[He's going to be half-worried sick and half ecstatic with every exploit Luffy attempts and succeeds at. Ace isn't quite as ignorant about his own mortality now. Or anyone else's. But he also loves seeing how strong his brother is, and what he's able to succeed at. Luffy really is amazing.

He's glad for the subject change though.] We're gonna grab a great summer island beach and party there. That's the plan, anyway.

Awesome! Those are the best for partying! Let me know as soon as you pick so I can get Sanjis there and started!

[And so he can put his little idea into motion.]

Yeah, I'll let you know soon. It's going to be the best party ever, and nothing is going to ruin this.

[It's not going to be good on any Marine that might find the site. There won't be any mercy for anyone who tries to ruin this day.]

I can't wait!!

[This is what Ace deserves -- life, happiness, all good things.]

[And these good things include Luffy. He's so happy now that he's closer to his brother than he's honestly ever been.]
